Activists on an ever-increasing number of campuses across the UK are launching actions - including meetings, rallies and demonstrations - against fees, cuts and the marketisation of education. Read on for more details.

Sheffield
The University of Sheffield Campaigns Collective, a forum bringing together a wide range of left-wing activist and campaigning groups on campus, is holding a meeting on Tuesday 1 December to organise opposition to the cuts that the university is proposing in order to claw back some of its £25m deficit (these include the closure of the entire Biblical Studies department). The meeting will also continue Sheffield’s activist tradition of linking day-to-day issues to the university’s extensive links with the arms trade and will be asking whether some of the money invested in arms companies might be better spent keeping departments open. The Facebook event for the meeting is here.

Newcastle
Students from across the activist community will be meeting on Tuesday 1 December to discuss campaigning against fees, cuts and privatisation. The Facebook event for the meeting is here.

Cambridge
Cambridge activists report that “the University of Cambridge is currently considering proposals to change the statutes to, among other things, make it easier for the university to sack any academic or academic related staff. Particularly, it will be easier for the University to make staff redundant. This comes in a context where the University has tried, in recent history, to close down whole departments (such as Architecture) or parts of courses (Portuguese in modern languages). We suspect that these changes come as groundwork for making cuts to our education.” For more info, click here.

Manchester
An activist group has formed to fight 127 job cuts at Manchester Metropolitan University. A recent rally mobilised dozens of students and workers despite adverse weather conditions! For more info, click here.

London
Bosses and corporate bureaucrats will descend on Hampton Court Palace - traditional seat of objectionable ruling-class behaviour - on Wednesday 2 December to discuss prospects for increasing the involvement of private sector business in the control and delivery of education. Education Not for Sale and others are mobilising to oppose them. For more info, click here.
